An Orangutan Looks at Jamie's Toes

I had just spent about twenty minutes entertaining this guy. I had shown him the contents of my backpack, which he was very interested with. I had run out of things to show him, so I took off my shoes. Perhaps he was just being polite, but he seemed to be genuinely interested in my feet, and that fact that they could come out of my shoes. His is staring at my bare feet in this photograph. I suspect he was hoping that somewhere along in this process there would be some sort of treat other than the sight of my oddly shaped toes. This was a delightful experience for me. I suspect that if there had been no glass he would have been physically and mentally capable of tearing my arms off. Adult male orangutans have a reputation for being one of the most dangerous zoo animals. I took this photograph at the Albuquerque Zoo on October 28, 2004.
